It's a reasonable question, and the answer starts somewhere slightly unexpected. Your mouth is crowded Researchers keep landing on roughly 700 species of bacteria living in the human mouth. That makes it the second most crowded microbial environment in your body, beaten only by your gut. Most of them are supposed to be there. They're residents, not invaders. Some help break down food, some train your immune system, and some occupy space that would otherwise go to bacteria you'd rather not host.
