Is Your Mouthwash Working Against You?

That bottle promising to kill 99.9% of germs has a problem it doesn't advertise: it can't tell the good bacteria from the bad.

Antiseptic rinses don't check ID at the door. The same swish that knocks down the microbes behind bad breath also knocks down the ones you want to keep, and some of those have a job you'd genuinely miss. Certain species on your tongue take the nitrate from leafy greens and convert it into nitrite, a step in the pathway your body uses to make nitric oxide, the molecule that helps keep your blood vessels relaxed.

Researchers have actually measured what happens when you knock those bacteria out. In one week-long study, healthy volunteers using a chlorhexidine rinse saw the nitrite their mouth produces fall by roughly 90 percent, their saliva turn more acidic, and their blood pressure edge upward. A separate study found the same kind of rinse measurably reshaped the balance of the mouth's bacteria after just a few days.

This explains something that quietly frustrates a lot of people. They rinse harder, more often, and the bad breath is back by the next morning. More rinsing doesn't rebalance a mouth that's out of balance, and blasting the whole ecosystem just clears the field for whatever regrows fastest, which is rarely the bacteria you wanted.

None of this is an argument against oral hygiene. Brushing and flossing matter. The point is that the target is balance, and a scorched-earth reset every morning works against it. If the good bacteria do the quiet work of keeping things in check, it makes more sense to support them than to wipe them out every night.
